Middleburg – A Notable Retreat

So many prominent people have lived in or around this little Town that is impossible to name them all who have played a large role its emergence during the mid-20th century.

In the 1960s, Middleburg was part of President John Kennedy's Camelot. JFK sometimes held press conferences in the Red Fox Inn. And in the following years, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis also stayed at the Inn and rode horses on the land now occupied by Salamander Resort & Spa.

Other notable residents have included Senator John Warner and his wife, Elizabeth Taylor; John Kent Cooke, owner of the Washington Redskins; Elizabeth Furness, who started the area’s first vineyard; the lobbying Brown family whose guest, Lyndon Johnson, had a heart attack at their farm called Huntlands; George Ohstroms, who founded the Sporting Museum; Ambassador and Mrs. George McGhee, whose home at historic “Farmer’s Delight” has been placed in a Foundation to preserve it for posterity; Ambassadors Averell and Pamela Harriman; TV Anchor Willard Scott; Philanthropist Paul Mellon; Actor Robert Duval, Washington Post Publisher Katherine Graham; Ambassador Jock Whitney; Sandy Lerner, co-founder of Cisco Systems; General William Mitchell; General George S. Patton, and Sheila C. Johnson of Salamander Farm.
