The Race Continues at the Volvik Championship at Reunion Resort

Reunion Resort welcomes the inaugural LPGA event

Symetra Tour players enter every season on the Road to the LPGA with one goal in mind, to land inside the top-10 on the Volvik Race for the Card and earn fully-exempt status on next year’s LPGA Tour. Next week, the Symetra Tour will head to Reunion Resort for the penultimate event on this year’s schedule and as the Tour enters its homestretch of tournaments, the Volvik Race for the Card is certain to continue heating up.

The inaugural Volvik Championship will take place September 20-22nd at Reunion Resort and will feature a 132-player field vying for a $100,000 total purse and $15,000 first-place prize. The event marks the second tournament on this year’s schedule that a Salamander Resort managed course has hosted a Symetra Tour event as the Tour played at Innisbrook Resort – Island Course in August for the IOA Golf Classic.

During this year’s 2013 season, there have been 12 different winners in 13 events with Christine Song serving as the only repeat winner. Currently ranked No. 2 in the Race, Song took home her first win of the season at the Guardian Retirement Championship then claimed another victory at last month’s Eagle Classic Presented by Bag Boy. Song is a former member of the LPGA Tour and finished No. 6 on the 2009 Volvik Race for the Card and No. 3 in 2010.

Currently standing atop the Volvik Race for the Card standings is Thailand native, P.K. Kongkraphan. The player known for her infectious smile and musical talents claimed her first career Symetra Tour victory at the Northeast Delta Dental International and has posted eight additional top-20 finishes. If Kongkraphan can hold on to maintain her top ranking and earn Player of the Year honors, she will join an elite list of former Player of the Year recipients including Lorena Ochoa, Cindy LaCrosse, Vicky Hurst, Stacy Prammanasudh, Mina Harigae, and Kathleen Ekey.

Along with Kongkraphan and Song, other 2013 Symetra Tour winners scheduled to compete at Reunion Resort include Jaclyn Sweeney ( Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club), Melissa Eaton (Florida’s Natural Charity Classic), Christine Song (Guardian Retirement Championship), Laura Kueny (Symetra Classic), Giulia Molinaro (Friends of Mission Charity Classic), Sue Kim (Decatur-Forsyth Classic), Cydney Clanton (Four Winds Invitational), Kim Kaufman (Island Resort Championship), Wei-Ling Hsu (Credit Union Challenge), Olivia Jordan-Higgins (Credit Union Classic Presented by Wegmans), and Katy Harris (IOA Golf Classic).

While the Volvik Race for the Card is on the forefront of everyone’s mind, World Golf Hall of Famer and 72-time LPGA Tour winner Annika Sorenstam will be on-hand Thursday, September 19th at 4:00 p.m. to conduct a player development session on “The Winning Touch”. Reunion Resort is the site of Sorenstam’s highly acclaimed ANNIKA Academy and serves as the only location in the world which features signature course signs by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson.
