Children’s Charity Event Scheduled for Dec. 1-4 at Fishing Lodge Cap Cana

BOSTON – The fourth-annual David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic will bring some of the biggest names in sports to the Dominican Republic this December in support of the Red Sox slugger’s charitable efforts. Fishing Lodge Cap Cana, a Salamander Caribbean Resort opening on Oct. 12, 2011, will play host to this year’s events, which includes a celebrity golf classic played at the world-renowned Punta Espada Golf Course in Cap Cana, DR. In its first three years, the Classic has netted more than $650,000 and has impacted hundreds of lives in New England and the Dominican Republic.

“The generosity from both our participants and the corporate community has far exceeded my expectations,” said Ortiz, now playing in his 15th major league season. “As this event continues to mature, I am excited by this opportunity and I hope we can have an even greater impact on those children at need.”

The Classic directly benefits the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, which was founded in 2006 in partnership with the International Hospital for Children, now known as the World Pediatric Project, to provide critical pediatric healthcare in the Dominican Republic. In 2009, the Fund partnered with Massachusetts General Hospital for Children to continue and extend its life-saving mission in the northeast.

“David Ortiz’s concern and empathy for those who are suffering are truly inspirational. His particular interest in helping critically ill young children and newborns reflects his deep-seated compassion,” said Dr. Peter L. Slavin, President of Massachusetts General Hospital. “David is a role model, not only because of his success as an athlete, but also because of his humanitarian values and commitment to helping others. We at Massachusetts General Hospital are proud of our partnership with David and grateful for his generosity to MGH for Children.”

“World Pediatric Project looks forward to celebrating with David the fourth year of bringing friends together to play golf in the beautiful country of the Dominican Republic and helping David realize his dream - that Dominican children receive the quality pediatric critical care they deserve and need to live a full and healthy life.” Susan Rickman, president World Pediatric Project.

Fishing Lodge Cap Cana includes 299 spacious, Mediterranean-style villas with stunning marina and ocean views, designer furnishings and innovative architecture. The event, which includes an awards gala and silent auction, has attracted some of the biggest names in sports, including baseball stars Alex Rodriguez, Pedro Martinez, Mariano Rivera, Ryan Howard, Jacoby Ellsbury and many more of Ortiz’s teammates, as well as NBA legends Bill Russell, Alonzo Mourning, and NHL Hall-of-Famer Bobby Orr.

“We are honored to host this wonderful event at our new resort,” said Sheila C. Johnson, founder and CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, and also vice president of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns Washington D.C.’s Wizards, Capitals and Mystics. “David is an inspiration to children throughout the world, especially in the United States and the Dominican Republic. We look forward to hosting the best event yet and helping raise money for this truly great cause.”

The four-day event includes a pairings party, an awards gala and online and silent auction.
“I am inviting all of those who want to make a difference in children’s lives to join me in the Dominican this winter,” Ortiz said. “We will have another super list of celebrities and with this new resort, it promises to be a very memorable weekend.”
