Awards marks 12th successive year that Summerville property achieves both distinctions

SUMMERVILLE, SC – The American Automobile Association has again bestowed upon Woodlands Inn its Five Diamond Award for both accommodations and dining. It is the 12th consecutive year that Woodlands has been awarded both coveted hospitality ratings. According to AAA, only 103 hotels nationwide will hold the Five Diamond distinction for 2009, while 59 restaurants will enjoy the same rating.

It is the 12th year that Woodlands has earned the rating for lodging and the 13th for dining. While there are three AAA Five Diamond lodging properties in South Carolina (Woodlands Inn, Wentworth Mansion and The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort), The Dining Room at Woodlands is the state’s only restaurant with the accolade.

Woodlands is also one of only four properties nationwide to hold the Mobil Five Star and AAA Five Diamond ratings for both lodging and dining. Woodlands has held this distinction since 2004, and Mobil announces its Five Star winners for 2009 in January.

The Inn has just undergone a major restoration and refurbishment project. Built in 1906, it features 18 guest rooms and suites, a country guest cottage, a day spa, croquet lawn, red-clay tennis courts, a temperature-controlled swimming pool, a variety of meeting facilities, and golf privileges at nearby area courses. The Dining Room at Woodlands is widely known for its innovative and sophisticated version of New American Cuisine and the use of fresh local foods to create a nightly menu with a Lowcountry influence.

AAA has been publishing its hotel rankings since 1977 when the AAA Tour Book printed the ratings for the first time. Less than one half of one percent of all properties inspected receives the AAA Five Diamond award.

When considering a property for a Four or Five Diamond rating, AAA inspectors check in to hotels anonymously. Upon departure, they will announce their identity and present a written summary of the inspection and the rating decision. AAA also publishes a list of criteria that is used throughout the evaluation process to determine a Five Diamond rating in eight categories of the guest experience including exterior and grounds, public areas, room dcor and ambiance, guest room amenities, bathrooms, housekeeping, management, and guest services.
