Transitions Championship Update - March 18

INNISBROOK, Fla. – March 18, 2010 – Garrett Willis, a sponsor exemption from Dade City who played Thursday wearing a USF cap, is the two-shot first round leader of the Transitions Championship, Tampa Bay’s PGA TOUR event on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook.
Willis, who had never broken par in six PGA TOUR rounds on the Copperhead, shot 30 on the back nine to lead the morning flight with a 6-under 65, and no one caught him in the afternoon as the wind gained in velocity.
The rest of the field can take comfort knowing K.J. Choi in 2002 is the only first round leader to ever win on the Copperhead and there is plenty of firepower in the group of six players two shots back – a group that includes defending champion Retief Goosen and Carl Pettersson who won in 2005.  Rookie sensation Rickie Fowler, Jonathan Byrd who seems to always play well on the Copperhead and veterans Jim Furyk and Jeff Maggert round out the group.
Maggert was in Houston yesterday as an alternate when he learned he might get in the tournament.  He caught a late flight and gained his spot when Vijay Singh withdrew with a back injury.
J.B. Holmes and England’s Ross Fisher were among those at 68, while Padraig Harrington, fresh despite a late night return from a Presidential reception at the White House, made 69 after holing out from a greenside bunker at 18.
A complete list of scores is here.  Second round play begins Friday morning at 7:45, with John Daly, who shot 71, among those in the first three groups.

Friday’s theme is Improve Your Vision, Improve Your Game.  In the Live Your Vision Pavilion, learn how healthy vision impacts athletic performance with swing instructors, and there will be special visits from PGA TOUR players.  Erik Estrada will be at the tournament issuing “Sightations” to spectators who are not properly protecting their eyes from the sun.
